You seldom hear the phrase "Aging is Amazing' but if only you realised that what you consider ordinary is someone else's extraordinary!
Think about it.
Have you ever considered that what you consider to be your 'ordinary' life, is actually your superpower?
You are the absolute embodiment of 'Life-Long Learning'.
You've learned what you want to keep in your life and do with your life.
You've lived, learned, adapted, and endured.
You’ve shown up for people when it wasn’t easy.
You’ve built a life that not only brings comfort to you but comfort to others. You've made decisions that shaped lives, and carried on through transitions that younger versions of yourself wouldn’t have believed possible and you continue to do so.
That’s not ordinary.
That’s resilience, perseverance and wisdom rolled into one.
And the calm confidence you carry now, that quiet knowing; that's something others strive for.
If only you knew.
Think of it this way...
You are the CEO of your household.
You are, first and foremost, the CEO of your household. You've returned to work after illness, navigated calamities, cared for loved ones, and still managed to carve new pathways, build new routines and maintain your values and integrity.
You get up, scrub up and face the day!
Why would someone want to aspire to be like you, to learn from you?
I can tell you.
They don’t yet know how strong a person you are. How much you’ve had to take on in your life and that attitude, energy and relentlessness towards remaining happy and carrying on, is something that doesn’t come naturally to everyone.
That steady, everyday perseverance isn’t ordinary, it’s a testament to your tenacity and resilience.
Research shows that this kind of mental aptitude, often referred to as psychological resilience, is directly tied to better health, faster recovery, and improved well-being (most especially as we enter our 'second half').
In fact, one study even found that those with higher resilience bounced back more quickly from physical setbacks and enjoyed greater quality of lifeβ― (even to the extent of reporting fewer hospitalisations).*
*HealthinAging.org reports that those with higher resilience experience fewer hospitalisations, less frailty, and a better quality of life as they age (even among those with chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes).
That perseverance, that calm confidence you carry isn’t just valuable, it’s invaluable.
You don’t recognise it in yourself yet as you’re too close to notice, but …
Promise me … the next time you catch yourself thinking “I’m not enough” or “I’m not doing enough” remember this: your daily choices, how you show up for others, how you respect and protect your own boundaries; these are powerful attributes.
They don’t need to be profound to be life-changing, but ...
... what I have to teach you is.
Resilience isn’t about constant hustle but about quiet strength.
It's not enough to just talk about wellness and resilience though; we need to embed it into the very fabric of our daily life, as I shared in my last Wellness Blog (having recently visited Singapore and the Far East) about the Eastern Approach to Wellness
Time to stop comparing yourself with others, to stop chasing the extraordinary and start recognising it in yourself.
So take a deep breath for now, cherish your super-ordinary self and carry on, in the knowledge that ...
You are already someone else’s version of extraordinary.
I promise you.
